Term | Definition |
photosynthesis | the process of carbon dioxide being fixed into sugar molecules with the use of sunlight |
cellular respiration | the process of breaking down sugar to release energy that also produces carbon dioxide |
decomposition | the breakdown of organic material by bacteria and fungi to release nutrients back to the soil including carbon and nitrogen |
evaporation | the process of surface water vaporizing and changing from a liquid to a gas |
precipitation | the product of condensation of water vapor that falls to the ground |
transpiration | the process where liquid water travels through plants to small pores under the leaves and vaporizes being released to the atmosphere |
condensation | the change of state of water from a gas to a liquid usually occurring in the atmosphere creating clouds. |
ground water | water beneath the earth's surface |
denitrifying bacteria | bacteria that convert nitrates in the soil to atmospheric nitrogen. |
nitrifying bacteria | bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrates which can be used by plants and other organisms. |
legume | a group of plants that can convert atmospheric nitrogen to nitrates because of associated nitrogen fixing bacteria in their root nodules. |
