Term | Definition |
Insulator | A substance that resists electrical current or the flow of heat |
Malleable | Can be hammered into sheets and other shapes without breaking (property of metals) |
Conductor | A substance that allows the flow of electric charge or transfers thermal energy |
Ductile | can be drawn into wires (metals) |
Physical property of metals | luster, malleable, ductile, conductive, higher, densities |
Physical property of Nonmetals | dull, brittle |
Luster | How a surface of a material shines or reflects light |
Conductivity | The ability to transfer heat, sound, or electricity easily |
Brittle | Breaks easily when force is applied. |
Metals | A solid material that is typically hard, shiny, malleable, ductile, and conducts heat and electricity well. |
Metalloids | have properties of both metals and non-metals. For example, it may conduct electricity well but is brittle (and therefore, not malleable). |
Non-Metals | are not able to conduct electricity or heat very well, very brittle (breakable), and cannot be made into wires or pounded into sheets |
Hardness | measure of how resistant a solid is to shape change when a force is applied. |
