Term | Definition |
SPEED | the rate at which an object moves |
"AVERAGE SPEED" | speed= DISTANCE/TIME |
VELOCITY | tells the rate an object moves AND in which direction it moves **Think of the air traffic controller |
ACCELERATION | change in velocity ( speed and direction) of an object **a car going at the same speed but turning or going into a curve |
FORCE | In science the push or pull between objects |
MASS | the amount of matter making up an object |
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE | what you change in your experiment OR it's the variable that you're testing |
DEPENDENT VARIABLE | It's what we measure: the information you put in the data table *changes the independent variable *doesn't depend on anything else (stands alone) |
INERTIA | 1) the tendency of ALL objects to RESIST a change in motion 2) the MORE mass an object has the MORE INERTIA it has |
NEWTON's 1st LAW OF MOTION | effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object at rest and on an object in motion |
NEWTON's 2nd LAW OF MOTION | The amount of force needed to accelerate an object. It depends upon the mass of the object |
MASS VS. WEIGHT | mass: does not change with location weight: it DOES change with location. A measure of the force of gravity |
