Term | Definition |
Polar | -A compound with an uneven distribution of charge. Ex:water |
Hydrogen Bond | -The force of attraction between hydrogen molecules with a positive charge and another atom with a negative charge. |
Cohesion | -An attractive force that holds molecules of a singe substance together. |
Adhesion | -The attractive force between two partials of a different substance. |
Capillary | -The attraction between molecules that result in a rise of the surface of a liquid when contacted with a solid. |
Solution | -A mixture in which one or more substances are uniformly distributed in another substance. |
Solute | -A substance dissolved into the solvent. |
Solvent | -A substance dissolved into the solute. |
Concentration | -The amount of solute dissolved in a fixed amount of solution. |
Saturated Solution | -A solution where no more solute can dissolve. |
Aqueous Solution | -Solutions on which water is the solvent |
Hydroxide Atom | -OH= |
Hydronium Ion | -H to the 3rd O plus |
Acid | -If the number of hydronium ions in a solution is greater than the number of hydroxide ions this is the solution. |
Base | -If the solution contains more hydroxide atom than ions |
Ph scale | -A scale to compare the amount of hydroxide atoms and hydronium ions in a substance. |
Buffer | -Chemical substances small amounts of either acids or bases. |
