biotic | living part of the ecosystem |
abiotic | nonliving part of the ecosystem |
ecosystem | area that contains both biotic and abiotic systems interacting together |
species | a single type of organism (dogs, cat, mouse, turtle,…) can successfully mate |
population | a group of a single type of organism (species) that live in a specific area; (dogs, cat, mouse, turtle,…) |
community | all the living organisms/populations (biotic) in an area |
scientific method | a specific repeatable set of steps or procedures used to answer a question or prove a hypothesis |
hypothesis | an educated guess as to the answer to a problem |
control | what does not change in an experiment and is used as a comparison |
variable | what changes in an experiment; only 1 in a valid experiment |
independent variable | the variable that is deliberately changed to observe the effect on the dependent variable (time) |
dependent variable | the variable that is expected to change when the independent variable is changed |
qualitative observations | observations made using your senses; color, texture, smell, taste… |
quantitative observations | observations that include a number; made using a measuring instrument |
