Term | Definition |
Compound Light Microscope | A microscope that shines light through a specimen and has two lenses to magnify an image |
Eyepiece (ocular lens) | Magnifies the image; usually 10x |
Objective Lens | Light passes through the specimen and then through the objective lens, which is located right above the specimen; enlarges the image of the specimen |
Stage | A platform that supports a slide holding the specimen and is placed over the opening in the stage of the microscope |
Light Source | A light bulb that provides light for viewing the image and can either be a light reflected with a mirror or an incandescent light from a small lamp |
Magnification | The increase of an object's apparent size |
Nosepiece | The structure that hold the set of objective lens and rotates them into place above the specimen |
Resolution | The power to show details clearly in an image |
Scanning Electron Microscope | Passes a beam of electrons over the specimen's surface and provides three-dimensional images of it |
Transmission Electron Microscope | Transmits a beam of electrons through a very thinly sliced specimen. Magnetic lenses enlarge the image and focus it on a screen or photographic plate. |
Metric System | The single, standard system of measurement scientists use based on powers of 10 (decimal system) |
Base Unit | Describe length, time, mass, and other qualities |
