Term | Definition |
scientific method | an organized approach used to learn how the natural world works |
observation | the act of perceiving a natural occurrence that causes someone to pose a question |
hypothesis | a proposed explanation for the way a particular aspect of the natural world functions |
prediction | a statement that forecasts what would happen in a test situation if the hypothesis were true. |
experiment | something used to test a hypothesis and its predictions |
control group | the group in an experiment that provides a normal standard against which the biologists can compare results of the experimental group |
experimental group | the group in an experiment that is identical to the control group except for one factor |
independent variable | "manipulated factor"; the one factor in the experimental group that is not in the control group |
dependent variable | "responding variable"; the thing that a scientist observes or measures, it is affected by the independent variable |
theory | what a scientist uses to reclassify a set of related hypotheses that are confirmed to be true many times |
peer review | when scientist who are experts in the field anonymously read and critique a research paper or journal entry. |
