Buffer | Any substance that minimizes changes in pH as acids or bases are added to a solution. |
Catalyst | Any substance that accelerates a chemical reaction. |
DNA | Chemical used to store information. Located in nucleus of cells. |
Electron | Negatively charged part of an atom. Part of atom altered by chemical reactions. |
Enzyme | A protein catalyst. Regulates chemical reactions within cells and body. |
Lipid | Fat, waxes and oils. Hydrophobic macromolecule. |
pH Scale | Natural scale for measuring differences between acids and bases. |
Protein | Macromolecule who's shape determines its function. Made of amino acids. |
Solvent | Liquid in which other substances dissolve. |
Solute | Any dissolved substance, |
Solution | The combination of the solute in the solvent. |
Fatty Acids | Monomer unit of a lipid. May be saturated or unsaturated. |
Amino Acids | Monomer unit of proteins. 20 different individual kinds. |
Nucleotide | Monomer unit of DNA/RNA |
Nucleic Acids | Macromolecules which include DNA and RNA |
Carbohydrates | Macromolecule used for energy in humans. |
Simple Sugars | Monomer unit of carbohydrates. Glucose, Fructose, Galactose. |
