Science | a way of learning about the natural world |
Observing | using one or more of your senses to gather imformation |
Quantitative Observation | these observations deal with numbers and amounts |
Qualitative Observation | these observations deal with descriptions that cannot be expressed with number |
Inferring | when you explain or interpret the things you observe |
Predicting | making a statement or claim about what will happen in the future based on passes experience or evidence |
Classifying | the grouping together of items that are alike in many ways |
Making Models | involves creating representations of complex objects or processes |
Evaluating | involves comparing observations and data to reach a conclusion about them |
Scientific Investigation | the way in which scientists study the natural world |
Cultural Bias | when the culture a person grew up in affects how they think |
Personal Bias | when a persons feelings affect how they think about things |
Experimental Bias | when a mistake in the design of an experiment makes a certain result more likely to happen |
Skeptism | having an attitude of doubt |
Ethics | the rules that enable people to know right from wrong |
Objective | when you make decisions and draw conclusions based on evidence |
Subjective | when you make decisions and draw conclusions based on your personal feelings |
Deductive Reasoning | a way to explain things when you start with a general idea and then you apply the idea to scientific observation |
Inductive Reasoning | a way to explain things when you start with specific observations and then make a generalization |
Scientific Inquiry | the diverse way in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence |
Hypothesis | a possible answer to a scientific question |
Variables | factors that can change an experiment |
Independent Variable | the one variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis |
Dependent Variable | the variable that changes in response to the independent variable |
Controlled Experiment | an experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time |
Data | the facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through qualitative and quantitative observations |
Scientific Theory | a well tested and widely accepted explanation of observation and experimental results |
Scientific Law | describe observed patterns in nature without trying to explain them |
