Adaptive Radiation | production of several species from one ancestral species. |
allele | an alternate from that a gene may have for a single trait;can be dominate or recessive. |
dominant | describe a trait that covers over, or dominates, another form of that trait. |
evolution | change in the genetics of a species over time. |
extinction | occurs when the last member of a species dies; causes a loss of diversity among living things. |
gene | segment of DNA on a chromosome. |
genetics | study of heredity |
genotype | genes that an organism has its genetic makeup |
mutation | process that changes DNA to form new alleles |
natural selection | process by which organisms that are suited to a particular environment are better able to survive and reproduce than organisms that are not. |
phenotype | the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. |
punnett square | tool used to predict the probability of certain traits in offspring that shows the different ways alleles can combine. |
recessive | describes a traits that is covered over, or dominated, by another form of that traits. |
traits | feature that an organisms inherits from its parents, such as eye color, that is coded for by DNA. |
