Term | Definition |
Gene | A cell that allows parents to give their offspring certain traits. |
genetics | The study of genes, and how they are passed down. |
inherited trait | A trait that develops in an offspring due to the parent contributing the gene. |
acquired trait | A trait that a person develops from the environmental factor, and that they weren’t born with. |
trait | A characteristic a person has. |
mutation | When the structure of a gene changes |
allele | One of the many forms of a gene |
dominant | A trait or gene that is stronger over the other possible trait. |
recessive | The trait or gene that is not as common as a dominant trait. |
homozygous | When someone has a pair of the same alleles. |
heterozygous | When someone has on dominant and one recessive allele. |
phenotype | Characteristics that are observed, and the chance of getting them |
genotype | The possibility of getting one kind of gene |
chromosome | These are part of a gene. |
cell division | When a cell divides to produce offspring or to make up more cells to repair. |
DNA | The type of gene that allows parents to give a certain trait to their offspring |
co-dominant | When homozygous genes are out together and both are present in the offspring |
incomplete dominant | When one allele does not dominate over the other, which forms a new phenotype. |
