Term | Definition |
endocytosis | cell takes in materials by enfolding and enclosing them; includes phagocytosis and pinocytosis |
endoplasmic reticulum | Network of membranes forming channels through the cytoplasm of a cell |
carrier-mediated transport | transport of ions or molecules across a cell membrane by special proteins |
vesicular transport | transport of materials into or out of a cell in membrane-bound sacs |
fluid mosaic model | currently accepted model of a cell membrane structure |
facilitated diffusion | carrier proteins assist the movement of substances through the cell mebrane |
hydrophobic | tail of a phospholipid, water hating |
hydrophilic | head of phospholipid, water loving |
lipid | Large organic Molecules made up of fatty acids and glycerol |
microtubules | Fine tubes that help to maintain the shape of the cell and hold organelles in place |
osmosis | diffusion of water molecules through a deferentially permeable membrane, form high to low concentration |
osmotic pressure | pressure due to differences of concentration on either side of the membrane. |
passive processes | no input of energy |
concentration/diffusion gradient | A difference in concentration of a solution between the inside and outside of the cell |
phagocytosis | cell surrounds, takes in, solid particles |
exocytosis | the contents of the vesicle of a cell are pushed out though the cell membrane |
diffusion | movement of particles of a liquid or a gas so they are evenly distributed over the space available |
active processes | a process that needs energy |
Active transport | the use of energy to move substances, ions across the cell membrane |
bilayer | Two layers that make up a single membrane |
cell membrane | forms the external boundary of a cell |
channel proteins | proteins that allow ions, small molecules and water to pass through the cell membrane |
deferentially permeable | permits the passage of certain substances but restricts the passage of others |
phospholipid | lipid molecule containing a phosphate group |
pinocytosis | which a cell enfolds, takes in, drops of liquid |
homeostasis | relatively constant environment in a cell, despite external environment |
vesicles | small membrane-bound cavity in the cytoplasm, smaller than a vacuole |
golgi body | structure in the cytoplasm of a cell consisting of a stack of flattened channels |
tissue/extracellular fluid | fluid found in the spaces between the cells |
