Term | Definition |
Active transport | A form of transport that requires energy as it moves particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration |
Passive transport | A form of transport that does not require energy as it moves particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration |
Diffusion | The movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration |
Facilitated diffusion | The movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a protein channel in the plasma membrane |
Osmosis | The net movement of water from an area of high concentration of water to an area of low concentration of water across a semi-permeable membrane |
Hypertonic | A solution which has a higher concentration of solutes compared to another solution |
Hypotonic | A solution which has a lower concentration of solutes compared to another solution |
Isotonic | A solution which has the same concentration of solutes as another solution |
Phagocytosis | A process where a cell takes in large particles by wrapping its plasma membrane around them |
Pinocytosis | A process where a cell takes in fluid by pinching off a section of the plasma membrane |
Exocytosis | A process where a vacuole fuses to the plasma membrane in order to release bulk materials from the cell |
Endocytosis | A process where a vacuole is formed from the plasma membrane in order to take bulk materials into the cell |
Carrier proteins | Proteins that use energy to transport specific substances across the plasma membrane |
Selectively permeable | A membrane that allows some substances to pass through, but not others |
