Organelle | Description |
Nucleus | Contains the genetic material (DNA) of the cell. |
Ribosome | The site of protein synthesis. They may be attached to the ER or free. |
Cytoplasm | The jelly-like fluid inside cells. It offers support to the cell and is the site of some reactions. |
Vacuole | Used to store different compounds. It is large and central in plants. |
Golgi body | It modifies and packages proteins for transport. |
Endoplasmic reticulum | Involved in the synthesis of proteins, steroids and lipids (fats). It may be smooth or rough. |
Mitochondria | The site of aerobic respiration. |
Plasma membrane | Separates the cytoplasm from the extracellular environment and controls what enters and exits the cell. |
Cell wall | The semi-rigid layer on the outside of plant cells. It is made of cellulose and provides structural support. |
Chloroplast | The site of photosynthesis. It is only found in plant cells. |
Lysosome | Breaks down waste material. |
Nucleolus | Produces ribosomal RNA |
