Term | Definition |
Self Fertilization | the fertilization of plants and some invertebrate animals by their own pollen or sperm rather than that of another individual. |
Reproductive System | a system of sex organs within an organism which work together for the purpose of sexual reproduction |
Pollen (sperm) | a powdery substance consisting of microscopic grains discharged from the male part of a flower. Each grain contains a male gamete and can be transported by the wind, insects, or other animals. |
Pollination | the transfer of pollen to a stigma, ovule, flower, or plant to allow fertilization. |
Ovary (egg) | a female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced |
Gametes | a mature haploid male or female germ cell that is able to unite with another of the opposite sex in sexual reproduction to form a zygote. |
Hormones | a class of signaling molecules produced by glands in multicellular organisms that target organs to regulate physiology and behaviour |
Endocrine System | the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood |
Homeostasis | the tendency of the body to seek and maintain a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment, even when faced with external changes |
