Term | Definition |
Source | Where the river starts. |
Valley | The area where the river runs with higher land on each side. |
Watershed | The dividing line between one river basin and the next. |
Tributaries | Smaller rivers which join the main one. |
Confluence | The point where two rivers join. |
River basin | Rain falling inside this area feeds the river. |
Floodplain | The flat land beside the river. |
Mouth | Where the river flows into the sea. |
Estuary | A wide river mouth which flows into the sea. Here fresh water and salty water mix. |
Erosion | Wearing away |
Transport | How river material is carried. |
Deposition | The dropping of material under certain conditions. |
