Year 8 Rivers

TermDefinition
Source Where the river starts.
Valley The area where the river runs with higher land on each side.
Watershed The dividing line between one river basin and the next.
Tributaries Smaller rivers which join the main one.
Confluence The point where two rivers join.
River basin Rain falling inside this area feeds the river.
Floodplain The flat land beside the river.
Mouth Where the river flows into the sea.
Estuary A wide river mouth which flows into the sea. Here fresh water and salty water mix.
Erosion Wearing away
Transport How river material is carried.
Deposition The dropping of material under certain conditions.
