Term | Definition |
Leaf | Place in a plant that produces food through the process of photosynthesis |
Fruit | Contains seeds of a plant after fertilization. SPREADS the seeds away from the parent. |
Flower | Part of plant that contains the structures for reproduction |
Stem | Part of the plant that supports the plant and transport food and water |
Root | Part of the plant absorbs water and minerals and anchors the plant |
Xylem | Part of the plant that transports water from the roots to the leaves |
Phloem | Part of the plant transports food produced in the leaves down to the stem and roots |
Geotropism | response to gravity |
Phototropism | response to light |
Turgor Pressure | Outward pressure from fluid within the cell (vacuole) pushing against the cell wall |
Stomata | Pores (holes) on a leaf that allows substances to pass into or out of the leaf |
Positive Tropism | Reaction of the organism TOWARDS from the stimulus. Like plants bending towards light. |
Negative Tropism | Reaction of the organism AWAY from the stimulus. Like plant stems growing AWAY from gravity. |
Shoot | The stems and leaves of a plant |
Seedling | A young plant |
External Stimuli | Something OUTSIDE an organism that makes it react. Ex. light |
Internal Stimuli | Something INSIDE an organism that makes it react. Ex. not enough water inside organism |
homeostasis | An organism having the perfect internal conditions |
Wilting | When plants do not have enough water to hold its structure and the it becomes soft and leans over |
