Term | Definition |
bedrock | unweathered rock that lies below the subsoil; some material in the soil may have come from the bedrock |
delta | a large mass of sediment deposited at the mouth of a river |
deposition | the dropping of sediment by wind, water, ice or gravity |
erosion | the movement of weathered rock material from one place to another |
fossil | the remains of a plant or animal that lived long ago and is preserved in some way |
glacier | a large mass of slow moving ice that flows down a slope |
humus | the decayed remains of plants and animals |
paleontologist | a scientist who studies fossils and organisms that lived long ago |
soil | bits of rock, minerals, and material that were once part of once living things |
subsoil | the bottom layer of soil, it contains small pieces of rock and very little humus. The soil particles are larger and lighter in color than topsoil |
topsoil | the uppermost level of the soil, best soil to grow plants because it contains a large amount of humus which provides nutrients needed for plants to grow properly. The particles are dark and small. |
weathering | the slow breaking apart or wearing away of rock into smaller pieces |
