Term | Definition |
Carbon/Oxygen Cycle | A cycle of matter in which carbon dioxide and oxygen are cycled by the process of photosynthesis and respiration. |
Photosynthesis | A process by which most autotrophs use the light energy from the Sun to make their own food. Chemical equation: 6(CO2) + 6(H2O) + Light -> C6H12O6 + 6(O2) |
Respiration | A process by which all organisms (including autotrophs) break down food in order to obtain energy. Chemical equation: C6H12O6 + 6(O2) -> 6(CO2) + (6H2O) + Energy |
Chemical Equation | A representation of what occurs in a chemical reaction using the symbols for the chemicals involved. |
Reactants | The left side of a chemical equation; these chemicals combine together through the reaction to make the new products. |
Products | The right side of a chemical equation; these chemicals are the result of the chemical reaction. |
Glucose | The energy-containing chemical (sugar) produced through photosynthesis: C6H12O6 |
Stomata | Pores or openings on the underside of leaves; they open to take in CO2 and release O2. H20 is lost as water vapor through transpiration |
Mitochondrion | A rod-shaped cell structure in which cellular respiration occurs so that the cell has the energy needed to carry out its life functions |
Chloroplast | An elongated cell structure containing chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place. |
Chlorophyll | A green molecule in the chloroplast which uses light energy from the Sun to change water and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen. |
