Term | Definition |
Filtration | removal of foreign materials from respiratory system by means of cilia |
Respiration | the process by which the chemical bond energy stored in nutrients is released for use in the cells |
Breathing | to take air, oxygen, etc., into the lungs and expel it; inhale and exhale; respire |
Inhalation | to take in air, oxygen to lungs through nose &/or mouth |
Exhalation | to expel air, carbon dioxide from lungs through nose &/or mouth |
Pharynx | area at the back of the throat that connects the mouth and nasal passages with the esophagus |
Larynx | “voice box” found at the upper part of the trachea |
Epiglottis | – flap that covers the glottis (top) of the trachea to prevent food from being inhaled |
Esophagus | tube that connects pharynx to the stomach and allows food to pass into the digestive system |
Trachea | “wind pipe”; tube containing cartilage rings that connects the pharynx to the bronchi |
Bronchi | 2 main branches of the trachea that enter the lungs |
Bronchioli | any of the smallest bronchial tubes, usually ending in alveoli |
Alveoli | “air sacs”; site of O2/CO2 exchange with surrounding capillaries |
Diaphragm | muscle separating the thoracic cavity (chest) from the abdominal cavity |
Bronchitis | inflammation of lining of bronchial tubes |
Asthma | allergic reaction leading to constriction of bronchial tubes resulting in difficulty breathing |
Emphysema | enlargement and degeneration of alveoli leading to decreased lung capacity |
