Term | Definition |
Activation Energy | Minimum energy required by the reactant species in order for the specific reaction to take place |
Biochemical Reaction | Transformation inside a cell as one molecule turn into another mediated by enzymes |
Coenzyme | Necessary for the functioning of an enzyme but a non protein compound |
Competitive Inhibitor | the inhibitor binding to the active site on the enzyme prevents binding of the substrate (and vice versa) Competitive inhibitors bind reversibly to the active site of the enzyme |
Enzyme | organic catalyst - usually a protein - speeds up a reaction in cells due to its particular shape |
Enzyme Activity | a measure of ability of a given enzyme to convert its substrates into products |
Enzyme Concentration | concentration of enzymes, have a significant effect on how a reaction proceeds |
Heavy Metal | metal of high density and high atomic weight, able to denature an enzyme |
Induced Fit Model | substrate and active site aren't an exact fit - active site is induced and undergoes a slight change in shape to accomadate the binding of the substrate |
Metabolism | Chemical reactions occurring in cells which are fundamental for ATP breakdown and body functioning |
Non-competitive Inhibitor | An non-substrate binds to the enzyme however not filling the active site, it alters the shape of the active site therefore inhibiting the prior reaction. |
pH | The concentration of H+ ions in comparison to OH- Acidic is low Basic is high a pH too low or high may denature an enzyme |
Substrate | reactant in reaction controlled by an enzyme level |
Substrate Concentration | Concentration of reactants involved in the reaction. |
Thyroid | Endocrine gland in the neck that produces several important hormones including thryroxine, triiodithyronine, and calcitonin. |
Thyroxin | Hormone secreted from the thyroid gland that promotes growth and development; in general, it increases the metabolic rate in cells |
Vitamins | essential organic requirement in the diet, needed in small amounts, often part of co-enzymes. |
