Alleles | Different forms of the same gene |
Genotype | The set of genes carried by an organism |
Hybrid | Another term for heterozygous |
Homozygous | An organism with two of the same inherited alleles |
Mutation | A random change in an organism's DNA |
Genetics | The study of how traits are inherited |
Heterozygous | An organism with two alleles that are different |
Phenotype | The physical expression of a gene |
Inherited Traits | Characteristics that are passed from parent to offspring |
Punnett Square | Tool used to help make predictions about inheritance |
Recessive Trait | A trait that will only be expressed if two copies are present |
Purebred | Another name for homozygous |
Genotype | Examples include HH, Hh, hh |
Phenotype | Examples include brown eyes, widow's peak |
Homozygous Dominant | An example is BB |
Homozygous Recessive | An example is bb |
Heterozygous | An example is Bb |
Purebred | Examples are BB and bb |
Hybrid | Examples are Bb |
Gene | Units of inheritance located on chromosomes |
DNA | molecule of inheritance located in the nucleus of cells |
Alleles | Units of inheritance that compose genes |
Acquired Traits | Examples include the ability to learn, dyed purple hair, pierced ears |
Incomplete dominance | A pattern of inheritance where the two inherited alleles blend to form the phenotype for organisms inheriting the heterozygous genotype. |
Co- dominance | A pattern of inheritance where the two inherited alleles for a trait both show up. |
Incomplete dominance | An example would be red flowers and white flowers producing pink flowers |
Co- dominance | An example would be black chickens and white chickens mating to produce offspring that are speckled both black and white. |
