| Term | Definition |
| Natural selection | theory of evolution developed by Darwin, based on four ideas: excess reproduction, variations, inheritance, and the advantages of specific traits in an environment. |
| Adaptation | inherited characteristic of a species that develops over time in response to an environmental factor, enabling the species to survive. |
| Diversity | the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc. |
| Species | group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. |
| Adapt | to change (something) so that it functions better or is better suited for a purpose |
| Competition | active demand by two or more organisms or kinds of organisms for some environmental resource in short supply |
| Survive | to remain alive : to continue to live |
| Reproduce | to produce offspring |
| Gene frequency | the ratio of the number of a specified allele in a population to the total of all alleles at its genetic locus |
| Predator | an animal that lives by killing and eating other animals : an animal that preys on other animals |
| Population | group of organisms of the same species that occupy the same geographic place at the same time. |
| Habitat | physical area in which an organism lives. |
