Common ancestry | between organisms of different species arises during speciation, in which new species are established from a single ancestral population. |
Fossil record | is life's evolutionary epic that unfolded over four billion years as environmental conditions and genetic potential interacted in accordance with natural selection. |
Biogeography | study of the distribution of plants and animals on Earth. |
Homology | similarity in sequence of a protein or nucleic acid between organisms of the same or different species. |
Anatomical homology | similarities between the structure of two organisms |
Molecular homology | Similarities among organisms at the molecular level due to a shared ancestry. |
Developmental homology | is recognized in embryos. Two different organisms can have a common embryonic trait, say gill pouches or a tail, but in some of those organisms those gills and tails are lost. |
Genome map | a record of the entire genome of an organism, consisting of correctly ordered gene maps. |
DNA sequence | is the process of determining the precise order of nucleotides within a DNA molecule. |
Taxonomic | The classification of organisms in an ordered system that indicates natural relationships. |
Phylogenic | the evolution of a genetically related group of organisms as distinguished from the development of the individual organism |
Offspring | the young of an animal or plant |
Species | a group of animals or plants that are similar and can produce young animals or plants |
