Term | Definition |
DNA | a long linear polymer found in the nucleus of a cell and formed from nucleotides and shaped like a double helix |
Traits | a distinguishing feature of your personal nature |
Nitrogenous base | simply a nitrogen containing molecule that has the same chemical properties as a base. |
Double helix | twisted-ladder shape of DNA, formed by two nucleotide strands twisted around each other. |
DNA molecule | a nucleic acid that consists of two long chains of nucleotides twisted together into a double helix and joined by hydrogen bonds between complementary bases adenine and thymine or cytosine and guanine |
Hydrogen bond | weak electrostatic bond formed by the attraction of opposite charges between a hydrogen atom and an oxygen, fluorine, nitrogen atom. |
Complementary nucleotide | a member of the pairs adenine-thymine, adenine-uracil, and guanine-cytosine that have the ability to hydrogen bond to one another |
Nucleotide | a subunit of nucleic acid formed from a simple sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. |
Genetic code | a set of three-letter combinations of nucleotides called codons, each of which corresponds to a specific amino acid or stop signal. |
Deoxyribose sugar | is a monosaccharide with idealized formula H−(C=O)−(CH2)−(CHOH)3−H. |
