Term | Definition |
eukaryote | organism whose cell contains a nucleus |
prokaryote | unicellular organism whose cell does not contain a nucleus |
cell wall | rigid layer that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms |
cell membrane | surrounds all cells and controls which substances can pass into or out of the cell |
nucleus | control center of cell; contains genetic material |
chromatin | strands of material in the nucleus that contains information for directing cell functions |
nucleolus | small structure in nucleus where ribosomes are made |
nuclear envelope | surrounds the nucleus; materials pass into and out of pores in the envelope |
cytoplasm | thick, clear, gel-like substance that fills the cell |
mitochondria | powerhouse of the cell - converts energy stored in food to energy the cell can use |
endoplasmic reticulum | network of membranes that help produce substances; some contain ribosomes |
ribosomes | found on ER and floating in cytoplasm - make proteins |
Golgi apparatus (bodies) | looks like flattened sacs and tubes - packages materials and distributes them to other parts of the cell - UPS |
vacuoles | larger in plants cells than animal cells - stores water, food and other materials- cell's storage compartment |
lysosomes | breaks down old cell parts and large food particles into smaller ones - cell's recycling center |
chloroplast | green structure in plant cells that captures sunlight and changes it into a form of energy that can make food |
