Term | Definition |
cartilage | tough, flexible connective tissue |
periosteum | thin membrane that covers a bone |
compact bone | mostly solid, dense part of a bone |
spongy bone | part of a bone with many small pores or spaces |
red marrow | soft tissue inside bones that makes blood cells |
yellow marrow | soft tissue inside of the long bones that is mostly fat |
joint | place where two or more bones come together |
flexor | muscle that bends a joint |
extensor | muscle that straightens a joint |
striated or skeletal muscle | muscle tissue with stripes that moves your bones |
smooth muscle | muscle that causes movements that you cannot control, makes up many of your organs like the stomach and intestines |
cardiac muscle | type of muscle found only in the heart and major blood vessels |
What are the three types of joints? | fixed -don't move; partly movable - limited motion (ribs); Movable - move (arms and legs) |
ball and socket joint | movement in all directions ex: shoulder or hip |
gliding joint | some movement in most directions, bones slide over each other ex: wrist |
pivotal joint | move from side to side or up and down ex: skull and neck joint |
hinge joint | movement back and forth in one direction ex: elbow and knee |
tendon | connective tissue that connects muscles to bones |
ligament | connective tissue that connects bone to bone |
muscle tissue | tissue that shortens in length |
nervous tissue | tissue that sends and receives messages |
connective tissue | tissue that connects organs together (ligaments, tendons, blood) |
epithelial tissue | covering tissue, protective |
