Term | Definition |
Passive Transport | A type of transport that does not require energy. Molecules move from high concentration to low concentration. |
Active Transport | A type of transport that does require cellular energy. Molecules may move from low concentration to high concentration |
Osmosis | A type of passive transport. WATER molecules move through a membrane from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
Diffusion | A type of passive transport. Molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration |
Endocytosis | A cell wraps it's cell membrane around a large particle, forming a vesicle, and brings it into the cell |
Exocytosis | A cell forms a vesicle around a large particle of waste, fuses the vesicle with the membrane and releases the contents from the cell. |
Photosynthesis | The process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food. |
Solute | Anything that can dissolve in water. High levels of solutes lower the concentration of water. |
Cellular respiration | The process by which cells break down food (glucose) to release energy that the cell can use (ATP). |
Mitosis | A process of cell division that forms two new identical nuclei |
