DNA Replication | the process by which DNA is copied in a cell before a cell divides by mitosis, meiosis, or binary fission |
Helicase | enzymes that separate DNA strands in the first step of DNA replication |
Replication Fork | the Y-shaped region that results when the two strands separate |
DNA Polymerase | enzymes that add complementary nucleotides during the second step of DNA replication, found floating freely inside the nucleus, to each of the original strands |
Semi-Conservative Replication | in each new DNA double helix, one strand is from the original molecule, and one strand is new |
Mutation | a change in the nucleotide sequence of a DNA molecule |
