Question | Answer |
Matter | Anything that takes up space or has a mass |
Mass | The material that makes up matter; can be measured |
Volume | The specific area an object takes up |
Density | D=m/v The amount of mass in a specific space |
Atom | The smallest part of an element, also the building blocks of matter |
Electron | Particle of an atom that has a negative charge, has an attractive force and moves around the nucleus |
Proton | Part of an atom with a positive charge, located inside the nucleus |
Neutron | Part of an atom with no charge, located in the nucleus |
Periodic Table | large grid that classifies the elements by their physical and chemical properties |
Periods/Rows | tell how many energy level each element has for the electrons to move around on |
Groups/Columns | tell how many valence electrons each element has |
Valence Electrons | the amount of electrons that move on the outer shell |
Atomic Number | the amount of protons inside of an atom's nucleus |
Atomic Mass | how much mass an element's atom has |
Chemical Property | the abilities of two or more substances to combine and create a new substance |
Physical Property | state of matter and appearance of a substance |
Ionic Bond | when elements lose or gain an electron during bonding |
Covalent Bond | when elements share electrons during bonding |
Chemical Change/ Reaction | elements bond together using the attractive force of electrons and create a reaction or change |
Compound/ Molecule | two or more elements combine in a specific ratio, creating a whole new substance |
Mixture | two or more substances that combine together keeping the original properties, DO NOT create a whole new substance |
Noble Gases | elements in group 18, these are the most stable elements, 8 valence electrons |
Halogens | elements in group 17, these are very reactive elements, 7 valence electrons |
Alkali Metals | elements in group 1, these are very reactive, 1 valence electron |
Metalloids | elements between metals and non-metals, have 3-7 valence electrons |
Endothermic | chemical change that absorbs energy |
Exothermic | chemical reaction that releases energy |
