field of view (FOV) | The view of the objects when looking through the eyepiece. |
microscope | A tool used by scientists to make objects appear larger for study. |
wet mount | Mounting a specimen using a drop or drops of water and a coverslip. |
optical power | The total magnification that the microscope is set on. Multiply the eyepiece by the objective lens. |
magnification | The number of times an image is made to look enlarged under the microscope or simple lenses. |
ocular (eyepiece) | The part of the microscope you look through. |
diaphragm | Part of the microscope that is used to adjust the amount of light that enters through the stage of a microscope. |

fine adjustment knob (focus) | Moves the stage up and down slightly. Use on any power. |
nosepiece | Rotates between the objective lenses. |
slide | Holds the specimen for viewing. |
