KPCOFGS | Use these letters to remember the order of the taxonomy. Kingdom - Phylum - Class - Order - Family - Genus - Species |
Bacteria | One of the three domains. Prokaryotic cells that are rod, sphere, or spiral shaped. |
Genus | Organisms in this group have similar genes. |
Classify | To arrange into groups. |
Scientific Name | To write the Scientific Name of an organism, write the Genus name and the species name. Always capitalize the Genus name. |
Archaea | One of the three domains. Prokaryotic cells that are extremophiles. |
Taxonomy | The ranking of living organisms into groups according to their relationships. |
Prokaryote | Prokaryotes are a type of cell that does not have an enclosed membrane or organelles. Smaller and simpler. |
Kingdoms | The top four kingdoms of Eukaryotes are: 1) animals 2) plants 3) fungi 4) protoists |
Eukaryotes | One of the three domains. Eukaryotes are type of cell that has an enclosed nucleus and organelles. Larger and more complex. |
DOMAINS | The largest groups of living organisms. The three domains are: 1) eukaryotes 2)archaea 3)bacteria |
Taxon | One level of the taxonomy is a taxon. |
Species | Members of this taxon level can breed together. |
Dichotomous Key | A set of yes/no questions of characteristics used to identify a species. |
Extremophiles | Archaea that can live in extreme conditions - salty, hot, cold, acidic, alkaline. |
