Term | Definition |
Vacuole | Stores water. Large in plants, small in animals. |
Mitochondria | Synthesizes cellular energy (ATP). |
Nucleus | Control center of the cell. The brain. Makes DNA and RNA. |
Nucleolus | Makes ribosomes. |
Cytoplasm | Jelly-like substance that holds organelles in place. |
Centrioles | In animal cells only. Help in cell division. |
Ribosomes | Make proteins. Can be free floating or attached to rough ER. |
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Transports proteins. Ribosomes embedded here make proteins. |
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Synthesizes lipids. |
Lysosomes | Garbage Disposal of cell. Destroys cell waste and broken organelles. |
Chloroplast | In plants and protists only. Green. Create carbohydrates (sugars) from sunlight. |
Cell Wall | NOT IN ANIMALS. Protection for the cell and give rigid structure. |
Eukaryotic | HAS a nucleus and membrane bound organelles. |
Prokaryotic | Does not have a nucleus or membrane organelles. |
Bacteria are this type of cell. | Prokaryotic |
Animals, Plants, Protists, and Fungi are this type of cell. | Eukaryotic |
Golgi Bodies (Apparatus) | Fed Ex. Packages and ships proteins. |
Cell membrane | Controls what enters and exits the cell. Semi-permiable. |
Semi-permiable | Some things can move in and out easily, others can't. (Ex. Window screen) |
Prokaryotic cells and ALL Eukaryotic cells have these in common. | Genetic information (DNA), ribosomes, cell (plasma) membrane, cytoplasm |
