Term | Definition |
Ribosomes | Make proteins |
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Highway where proteins are made--studded with ribosomes |
Nucleus | Conntrol center of cell; contains DNA in the form of chromosomes |
Nucleolus | Makes ribosomes |
Cell wall | Supportive structure on the outside of plant cells and bacteria cells |
Cell Membrane | Semipermeable outer covering on all cells; regulates what comes in or out of cell |
Golgi body | Modifies, packages and delivers products to places in or out of cell |
Centriole | Tubular shaped organelle in animal cells only; they help separate chromosomes when the cell is dividing |
Chloroplast | Organelle in plant cells that collects light to make food |
Lysosome | Organelle in animal cells only that breaks down old cell parts or other waste |
Cytoskeleton or microtubules | Supportive protein tracks or tubes inside the cell that serve as tracks to walk stuff to places in the cell |
Cilia or flagella | Moving "arms" that help cells swim or filter dust, etc. |
Cytoplasm | Liquid gel that fills cells |
Central vacuole | Vacuole in plant cells only that is mostly filled with water and minerals. |
Vacuole or vessicle | Storage container in cells |
Mitochondrion | Powerhouse; breaks down food in eukaryotic cells to make ATP energy |
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Highway where fats are made; also detoxifies poisons for cells |
