Term | Definition |
1. Cell Membrane | Protects the cell and regulates what enters and leaves the cell. |
2. Polar | Phosphate head that faces the outside and inside of cell, freely interacting with water |
3. Non-Polar | Fatty acid tails, attached to phosphate head that remain facing the inside of the cell membrane, avoiding water in and out of the cell. |
4. Hydrophobic | Scared of water. |
5. Hydrophilic | water loving. |
6.Fluid Mosaic | Flexible lipid bilayer with proteins embedded. |
7. Simple Diffusion | Small molecules like oxygen, water and carbon dioxide can move thru the lipid bilayer from high to low concentration. |
8.Facilitated Diffusion | Molecules travel from high to low, through channel protein. |
9. Semi-Permeable | Lets SOME things pass thru. |
10. Equilibrium | Concentration is the same throughout the system. |
11. Active Transport | Uses ATP energy to move molecules across the membrane. |
12.Passive Transport | Does not require energy to move molecules move molecules across the membrane. |
13. Channel Protein | Protein that allows certain molecules to pass In and out of cell, from high to low concentration. |
14. Protein Pump | Protein that allows specific molecules in and out cell, from low to high concentration, and uses ATP. |
