Term | Definition |
Ecology | The study of plants and animals with each other and their environments |
Ecosystem | All the living and nonliving things that exist and interact in a given area. |
Food Web | A series of overlapping food chains |
Energy Pyramid | A diagram to show the amount of energy in a food chain. There is more energy at the producer level. |
Carnivore | A consumer that eats other animals for food/energy |
Herbivore | A consumer that eats only plants for food/energy. |
Biotic | Living things |
Abiotic | Non-living things |
Mimicry | Some organisms adapt by looking like other organisms |
Adaptation | A skill or feature that an animal develops over time which helps it to survive in its environment. |
Omnivore | A consumer that eats both plants and animals. |
Predator | An animal that kills and eats other animals. |
Prey | An animal that is killed an eaten by a predator. |
Producers | Green plants that can make their own food through photosynthesis. |
Consumer | An animal that needs to eat plants/animals for food/energy. |
Food Chain | The path of energy from producer to each consumer. |
Camouflage | Some organisms blend in with their surroundings. |
Evolution | The gradual change in a species over time. |
Natural selection | Is the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species. |
Overproduction | Organisms produce more offspring than the environment can support. |
Variations | Organisms of the same species are very similar, but they do have individual differences among traits. |
Competition | All the organisms struggle for food, water, and the other necessities of life. Only those organisms best suited to their surroundings survive and reproduce. |
Extinction | is when a certain species completely dies out due to environmental changes and the inability to adapt to those changes. |
