Term | Definition |
Nuclear envelope | A double membrane surrounding the nucleus |
Nuclear pore | A gateway to allow materials to move between the cytoplasm and the nucleus |
Nucleolus | Region where ribosomes are assembled |
Rough ER | Series of flattened membrane stacks studded with ribosomes where secretory proteins are made |
Smooth ER | Network of membranes where lipid synthesis and detoxification reactions occur |
Golgi | Series of membrane sacks where proteins are modified and sorted to their correct destinations |
Mitochondria | Double membrane structures that produce the ATP used by the cell as an energy source |
Microvilli | Highly folded region of the cell surface membrane to allow easier faster movement of materials into and out of the cell |
Centrioles | Organise the microtubules within the cell and involved in cell division |
Microtubules | Protein scaffold within the cell involved in directing and organising materials within the cytoplasm |
Ribosomes | produce proteins within the cell. Maybe free within the cytoplasm or located on the rough ER |
Cell surface membrane | Regulates the movement of materials into and out of the cell |
