What are Darwin's 4 postulates of evolution? | 1. individuals within a species must have variance 2. some of these variations must be heritable 3. some of these inherited variations must be better for survival 4. the variations better for survival are not random |
How do mutation's effect evolution? | Most mutations are either silent or harmful and are not a strong force because these mutations usually alter a single protein. It becomes a stronger force when the mutation is in the form of a duplication of a regulatory gene controlling whole pathways |
What is genetic drift? | This is a random change in allele frequencies in a small population due to chance events |
What is gene flow? | This is a homogenizing effect on a population due to allele transference by movement of individuals |
What is the founder effect? | This has to do with gene flow, a small population with one or two genotypes spawns a new area so there is not much variation |
