turgor pressure | the internal pressure created by the diffusion of water into a plant cell (like air filling a balloon) |
osmosis | the diffusion of water through a membrane |
selectively permeable membranes | allow some substances to pass through them while blocking others (like a colander) |
active transport | another way substances move across a cell membrane (in addition to diffusion an osmosis) - use energy, proteins do the work, ex. sodium potassium pump |
passive transport | diffusion and osmosis |
binary fission | cells with no nucleus (no brain) split into 2 identical cells in 30 minutes (bacteria does this-it has no nucleus) |
mitosis | cells with a nucleus duplicate DNA to create 2 new identical cells |
