Term | Definition |
Decibel | a unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an electrical signal by comparing it with a given level on a logarithmic scale |
Compression | the action of compressing or being compressed |
Rarefaction | diminution in the density of something, especially air or a gas. |
Doppler Effect | an increase (or decrease) in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move toward (or away from) each other. |
Vacuum | a space entirely devoid of matter. |
Frequency | the rate at which a vibration occurs that constitutes a wave, either in a material (as in sound waves), or in an electromagnetic field (as in radio waves and light), usually measured per second. |
Hertz | the SI unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second. |
Ultrasonic | of or involving sound waves with a frequency above the upper limit of human hearing. |
Infrasonic | relating to or denoting sound waves with a frequency below the lower limit of human audibility |
Echo | a sound or series of sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener |
Interference | the action of interfering or the process of being interfered with |
Reverberation | prolongation of a sound; resonance. |
Pitch | the quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it; the degree of highness or lowness of a tone. |
Rhythm | a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound |
Oscilloscope | a device for viewing oscillations, as of electrical voltage or current, by a display on the screen of a cathode ray tube. |
Wavelenght | the distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave. |
Trough | a long, narrow open container for animals to eat or drink out of. |
Kilohertz | a measure of frequency equivalent to 1,000 cycles per second. |
Megahertz | one million hertz, especially as a measure of the frequency of radio transmissions or the clock speed of a computer. |
Echolocation | the location of objects by reflected sound, in particular that used by animals such as dolphins and bats. |
