artery | blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the body's organs |
capillary | tiny blood vessel that allows an exchange between blood and cells in tissue |
vein | a vessel that carries blood to the heart |
pulmonary circulation | the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart through the pulmonary arteries, capillaries, and veins |
systemic circulation | flow of blood from the heart to all parts of the body and back to the heart |
blood | fluid that carries gases, nutrients, and wastes through the body and that is made up of platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells, and plasma |
blood pressure | force that the blood exerts on the walls of the arteries |
lymphatic system | collection of organs whose primary function is to collect extracellular fluid and return it to the blood; organs in the system include lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels |
lymph | fluid that is collected by the lymphatic vessels and nodes |
lymph node | oval masses of lymphatic tissue found in the lymphatic vessels that filter lymph |
thymus | main gland of the lymphatic system; it releases mature T lymphocytes |
spleen | largest lymphatic organ in the body; serves as a blood reservoir, disintegrates old red blood cells, and produces lymphocytes and plasmids |
tonsils | small, rounded masses of lymphatic tissue located in the pharnyx and in the passage from the mouth to the pharnyx |
respiration | exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between living cells and their environment; includes breathing and cellular respiration |
respiratory system | collection of organs whose primary function is to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide; organs in this system include lungs, throat and passageways that lead to the lungs |
pharnyx | in animals with a digestive tract, the passage from the mouth to the larnyx and esophagus |
larnyx | area of the throat that contains the vocal cords and produces vocal sounds |
trachea | in vertebrates, the tube that connects the larnyx to the lungs |
bronchus | one of the two tubes that connect the lungs with the trachea |
