Ecology | The study of how living things interact with one another and with the non-living things in their environment. |
Ecosystem | A community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment (things like air, water and mineral soil), interacting as a system. |
Abiotic Factors | Non living things in the ecosystem ( air, water, rocks and soil, sunlight) |
Biotic Factors | Living things in the ecosystem (plants, animals and microbes) |
Population | A group of individuals of the same species that live in the same place. |
Species | Organisms that are the same species are closely related and can mate to produce offspring. |
Community | All the different species that live and interact in an area. |
Habitat | The place where an organism usually lives. |
Producers | Organisms that make their own food |
Consumers | Organisms that obtain and eat their food |
Decomposers | Organisms that a consumer that eats waste material |
Symbiotic Relationships | A close, prolonged association between two or more different organisms of different species that may, but does not necessarily, benefit each member. |
Parasitism | A symbiotic relationship where one species benefits and the other is harmed. |
Mutualism | A symbiotic relationship where both species benefit. |
Commensalism | A symbiotic relationship where one species benefits and the other is not helped or harmed. |
Global change | Changes to the planet's environmental systems, such as nutrients and water cycles, the climate, and ecosystems. Global change is frequently. |
Nutrient pollution | unintended inputs of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, into natural areas. Often caused by agricultural fertilizers, human and livestock waste and by-products of industry. |
Invasive Species | Species that are introduced from their native range into a new area, where they then have an ecological or economic impact. |
Endangered species | A species of animal or plant that is seriously at risk of extinction. |
Threatened species | Threatened species are any species (including animals, plants, fungi, etc.) which are vulnerable to endangerment in the near future. |
Endemic species | An organism that is known to exist only in a certain location or region and is not naturally found anywhere else on the planet. |
Niche | An organisms special role in the ecosystem summary. |
