Term | Definition |
Evolution | The gradual change in a species over time |
Charles Darwin | The "Father of Evolution" that studied finches in the Galapagos Islands and noticed the adaptations of animals compared to the mainland. |
Species | a group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring |
Adaptation | A trait that has changed to help an organism survive and reproduce |
Mimicry | Some organisms adapt by looking like other organisms. |
Camouflage | Some organisms blend in with their surroundings that makes it difficult to see them. |
Natural Selection | The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce. |
Overproduction | Organisms produce more offspring than the environment can support because many of the offspring will die before maturing. |
Variation | Organisms of the SAME species are very similar but they do have individual differences among their traits |
Competition | Overproduction leads to struggle for food, water and other necessities. |
Extinction | When a species dies out |
Sedimentary rock | Rock that is formed in layers and where you find most fossils |
Half life | The time it takes for half of a radioactive substance to decay |
Relative/Carbon/Absolute dating | A method that measures the actual age of fossils |
Homologous structures | Similar structures in related species that have different functions |
Branching tree diagram | A diagram showing how scientists think groups of organisms are related |
