Term | Definition |
xylem vessels | system of "tubes" in the plant that carries water from roots to other parts of the plant |
Phloem-vessels | system of "tubes" in the plant that carries the glucose (plant's food) from leaves out to rest of the plan |
Pollination | when pollen is spread by wind, bees, insects, birds |
Fertilization | the process by which a seed is formed within the flower (or cone) |
Germination | the process by which a seed becomes a plant |
Seed coat | Hard protective cover for embryo |
Embryo | baby plant |
Food supply | food stored in seed to support the embryo as it grows into a young plant |
Photosynthesis | process by which a plant takes in carbon dioxide and water and with the energy from sunlight makes food (glucose) and gives off oxygen |
Reactants in photosynthesis | Carbon dioxide, water and sunlight |
Equation for Photosynthesis | Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy from Sunlight = Glucose + Oxygen |
Chloroplasts | where photosynthesis occurs in the leaf |
chlorophyll | pigment which makes the leaf green; pigment which captures energy from sunlight |
Glucose | sugar which is the food produced by the plant during photosynthesis |
stoma (stomata) | the opening(s) through which carbon dioxide or water vapor is released and oxygen is taken in by the plant |
Transpiration | the process by which water vapor is released into the air through the stomata in the plant |
Cellular Respiration | the process by which plant cells use oxygen to break down food (the glucose) to get energy |
Equation for Cellular Respiration | Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy (ATP) |
Dormancy | Inactivity; a period of time when activity in the plant or seed stops due to temperature change or lack of water |
Tropism | a plant's response to an external stimulus such as sunlight or water |
Phototropism | a plant's response to light |
Geotropism | a plant's response to gravity |
Hydrotropism | a plant's response to water or water source |
Thigmotropism | a plant's response to touch or contact |
