Term | Definition |
Discrete Variation | Differences between members of the same species which allows them to be put into seperate, distinct groups. |
Continuous Variation | Differences between members of the same species which have a range of values between two extremes. |
Gene | A small area of a chromosome which contains the instructions to make the proteins needed to control a particular characteristic. |
Homozygous | A genotype which contains 2 identical alleles. |
Heterozygous | A genotype which contains 2 different alleles. |
Alleles | The different forms of a gene for a particular characteristic; which cause the variations seen in a single characteristic. |
Phenotype | The physical characteristics displayed by an organism. |
Genotype | The alleles present within an individual for a particular characteristic. |
Dominant Characteristic | A characteristic which can cover the effect of another characteristic. |
Recessive Characteristic | A characteristic whose effect has been covered by a dominant characteristic |
Family Tree | A diagram which shows the expression and passage of a characteristic through a number of generations of the same family |
Genetic Counselling | The process by which people at risk of an inherited disorder are advised of the consequences and nature of the disorder, the probability of developing or passing it on. |
Polygenic Inheritance | Characteristics which are controlled by 2 or more different genes. |
