EPS s/s: | Dystonias, Akinesia, akathisia, parkinsonian syndrome, tardive dyskinesia |
Dystonias are: | Rapidly developing contractions of muscles of the tongue, jaw and neck. Oculogyric crisis |
Parkinsonian syndrome: | Mask/like face, shuffling gait, hand tremors, cogwheel rigidity, drooling and pill-rolling |
Akinesia: | Loss of impairment of the power of voluntary movement |
Akathisia: | Restless arms and leg movements |
Tardive dyskinesia: | Facial: tongue protruding, blowing and smacking movements Limbs: rapid, irregular or serpentine-like movements Trunk: neck, shoulder, dramatic rocking, or twisting pelvic thrusts |
Antiparkinsonian meds: tx of EPS | Cogentin, akineton, kemadrin, artane, bendryl, catapres, symmetral, mirapex, inderal (akathisia) |
S/e of antiparkinsonian meds: | Dry mouth / Blurred vision, constipation / urinary hesitance / retention, Nausea / vomiting |
Antipsychotic med s/e: | Agranulocytosis, cholestatic jaundice, neuromalignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia |
Agranulocytosis s/s | Flu-like, sore throat and general malaise |
Cholestatic jaundice s/s | Fever, malaise, nausea & abdominal pain |
NMS: | Hyperthermia >107F and severe EPS |
To tx TD: | TD (Calan, Procardia, or Parlodel) |
To tx NMS | NMS (Dantrium, Parlodel, or Symmetrel) |
