| Term | Definition |
| Deformation | the action or process of changing in shape or distorting, especially through the application of pressure. |
| Folding | bend (something flexible and relatively flat) over on itself so that one part of it covers another. |
| Fault | an extended break in a body of rock, marked by the relative displacement and discontinuity of strata on either side of a particular surface. |
| Shear stress | A shear stress, denoted, is defined as the component of stress coplanar with a material cross section. Shear stress arises from the force vector component parallel to the cross section. |
| Tension | a strained state or condition resulting from forces acting in opposition to each other. |
| Compression | the action of compressing or being compressed. |
