Igneous Rock | Forms when magma or lava cools and hardens to become solid. Ex. Obsidian. |
Sedimentary Rock | Forms when minerals that form from solutions or sediment from older rocks get pressed or cemented together. Ex. Sandstone. |
Metamorphic Rock | Forms when pressure, temperature, or chemical processed change existing rock. Ex. Gneiss. |
Rock Cycle | The series of processes in which rock changes from one type to another. It can take millions of years. Rocks can take different paths through the cycle. |
Uplift | The rising of reigions of the crust to higher elevations. It increases th erate of erosion of the rock. |
Subsidence | The sinking of the crust to lower elevations. Leads to the formation of a basin where sediments can be deposited. |
Rift Zone | Area where deep cracks form, very common where two tectonic plates move apart. |
