Term | Definition |
Matter | Any solid, liquid, or gas that takes up space and as mass |
Mass | Amount of matter in an object. More mass = heavier |
Volume | Amount of space taken up by an object |
Density | Amount of matter in a given amount of space. Less density = will float |
Density formula | Density = mass/volume |
Physical Properties | Properties that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance, describe physical characteristics |
Chemical Properties | Properties that describe how a substance reacts with another substance, describe chemical characteristics |
Chemical Change | Ex: toast burning or baking a cake |
Physical Change | Ex: boiling water or melting butter |
Properties of Metals | Conduct heat and electricity, shiny when polished, bend rather than break |
Acid | Ex: tastes sour and is corrosive |
Compound | Two or more elements that chemically bond to create a new substance |
Exothermic | Reaction that releases heat. (Feels warm to the touch.) |
Endothermic | Reaction that takes in heat. (Feels warm to the touch.) |
Proton | Positive particle found in the nucleus |
Neutron | No charge particle found in the nucleus |
Electron | A negative particle found outside the nucleus |
Atom | The smallest unit of matter |
Atomic Number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, this determines the element. |
Element | A substance that cannot be broken down into anything simpler, is made of atoms. |
Periodic Table | The table that contains an arrangement of all known elements. |
Metal | An element that conducts heat and electricity, and is shiny and bendable. |
Nonmetal | An element that does not conducts heat or electricity, and is not shiny and bendable |
Metalloid | An element that could have properties of both metals and nonmetals. |
